Equine Therapy for Veteran’s Untilizing Brannaman Horsemanship

I have been busy working on developing a Socially Conscious Business (Social Enterprise) where we provide Equine Therapy for Veterans!!  This is a very exciting time for me as I have become quite clear on what I would like to see happen long term for me, my horses as well as our beautiful facility.  I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to run our exceptional Equestrian Facility with my six horses…Jessie, Scamp and JT (3 formally “unwanted” horses) as well as my 2 foster boys Maximus and Flynn from Hope For Horses. My primary goal for the last few months has been to find a positive and healthy way for my horses to have a “job” where they have purpose with as minimal “wear and tear” as possible on their body and minds.

Buck Brannaman ClinicEquine Therapy programs currently exist across the country but from what I can see…non of them follow the Buck Brannaman, Ray Hunt Tom Dorrance Horsemanship with their therapy horses.  There has been some debate on whether horses used in therapy situations are really being treated and thought of in a fare and human way.  Not to say there is “actual abuse” in these types of programs…but there can be a debate on whether the therapy programs are in the “best” interest of the horse.  My goal is to provide an environment that supports the highest and greatest good for both horses and humans!!

The way in which I hope to provide the best support for the horses and indirectly supporting the Veterans; is by utilizing the Brannaman Horsemanship.  It’s my belief my therapy horses will be physically as well as mentally supported through the Ground Work; allowing the horse to feel confident working with the Veterans.

I am excited to see how this path will continue to unfold for me and my horses.  The thought of each horse having a “purpose” well into their years even after they are no longer comfortable carrying a rider, but have a ton of life left…is the best!!

The first few months of 2012 will be spent continuing the Foundation Horsemanship with my horses, building the infrastructure for my Social Enterprise “Horses For Veterans”, building relationships with our local military organizations and gaining the necessary  certifications to begin working with our local Veteran’s and their therapists.

I am looking forward the 2012!!

Maximus and Flynn Ryder Update

Hi REF Community

1. “Bay Horse” name change…based on popular demand we will be calling him “Flynn”.   His eventual show name would be “Flynn Ryder”!!  I think it’s a great fit!

2. “Flynn” has been doing great these last few days with Tanya…as soon as she feels he has slimmed down enough to wear her Western Saddle they will be out riding!!

3. Maximus and I have had 2 rides and it has gone great!! Many thanks to Tanya for her training as I was prepared for him to be less willing to go forward and harder in the mouth. She has done a fantastic job! We will continue to work on his social skills in the arena as well as around the barn…as he still thinks he needs to be dominate towards the geldings and has a bit too much interest in the mares. 🙂  I am very proud of his great progress.

Again, thank you for your continued support here at REF!!

Have a great weekend!

Vanessa

Welcome 2nd REF Foster Horse

Hi REF Community,

I want start by saying “Thank You” to those individuals who were able to attend the Hope For Horses fundraiser this past Saturday night!! Your support is greatly appreciated!!

I would like to welcome our latest foster addition “Bay Horse”!  I know this is a terrible name but was hoping you all would take a few moments to check him out and see if you think of a name more fitting.  He is a very stout and handsome Westphalian Warmblood gelding with a great deal of personality.  He is a bit mouthy so please watch yourself around him (no hand feeding treats 🙂 as Tanya and I will be working diligently on his manners these next few weeks.  Elyssa Armstrong has already given her name suggestion of …Flynn Ryder from the movie Tangled.  If you like this name or come up with another name please e-mail me or leave it in the comment box outside the barn office by this Friday July 15th!!

I am so proud of how well Maximus has settled in…and want to give a huge “thank you” to Tanya Striebeck as REF and I would not be able to foster Maximus nor “Bay Horse” without her training and support!!

Maximus Update!

Maximus has made tremendous strides these last 2 weeks here at Rider’s Edge Farm!!  Tanya has been diligently working Maximus on his ground manors and ride-ability.  Today was the 2nd time she rode him…and he walk, trot cantered in the round pen while remaining calm and relaxed!  We are extremely pleased with his progress and look forward to moving his training from the smaller confines of the round pen to our large indoor arena.  Tanya has exposed Maximus to the indoor, the mirrors as well as the occasional traffic from other sport-horses doing their work.  He seems to handle the traffic nicely and will soon be ready to ride in the arena as well.

Thank you to the REF community for their continued support with the fostering of Maximus!  We also would like to thank Amanda Kaplan for her generous donation of Adequan as we know Maximus will greatly appreciate it!

Stay tuned for more information regarding Maximus’s progress at Rider’s Edge Farm.  As always we are looking for sponsorship to help off-set the ever growing costs associated with caring for Maximus.  If you or someone you know is looking for an amazing opportunity to sponsor a kind-hearted and athletic foster horse please contact Vanessa Howard via Facebook or through our website at…

REF’s New Foster Horse Maximus!!

REF would like to welcome our newest equine addition…Maximus!  He is a Handsome 16.3h Holsteiner Gelding. Maximus has settled in nicely: getting to know his other herd-mates, learning how to respect the halter and embracing the reality of my 2 young daughters thinking he is the “Real” Maximus from the movie “Tangled”!

His story is one of abuse and neglect…but we are looking to focus on his exceptional future rather than dwell on his unsavory past!

Please help join me in welcoming Maximus to the REF Community!  If you or someone you know would like to come meet Maximus or learn more about how you can Sponsor him through his fostering experience please don’t hesitate to ask.  As you know…horses can be very costly, so any help is greatly appreciated!!

We are very excited to see Maximus grow here at REF.
